Batu Hijau PROJECT

Lorbrand idler rollers supplied through Fluor for the 6.8 km overland ore conveyor, on what was at the time the world's largest greenfield mining project.

PROJECT REFERENCE

Batu Hijau Copper-Gold Mine

Batu Hijau, "green rock" in Indonesian, is an open-pit copper-gold porphyry mine on the remote island of Sumbawa in eastern Indonesia. When Fluor delivered the EPC contract in the late 1990s it was the world's largest greenfield mining project: a complete mine, concentrator, 17.6 km concentrate pipeline, dedicated port and power station built from scratch on an island with no existing infrastructure. Following primary crushing in the pit, ore travels to the concentrator on a 6.8 km, 1.8 m wide overland conveyor.

Batu Hijau, "green rock" in Indonesian, is a copper-gold porphyry mine on Sumbawa island in West Nusa Tenggara, about 1,530 km east of Jakarta. It was operated by PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara, a joint venture of Newmont, Sumitomo and PT Pukuafu Indah, and is today operated by PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara. The orebody holds reserves on the order of 914 Mt at 0.53% copper and 0.40 g/t gold. When Fluor delivered the EPC contract in the late 1990s it was the world's largest greenfield mining project: a complete mine, concentrator, 17.6 km concentrate pipeline, dedicated port and power station built from nothing on an island with no existing infrastructure and a largely unskilled local workforce, against the backdrop of Indonesia's economic and political upheaval.
After primary crushing in the pit, ore moves to the concentrator on a 6.8 km overland conveyor with a 1.8 m (6 ft) wide belt, one of the longest and widest overland ore conveyors in South-East Asia at the time. Lorbrand supplied its idler rollers through Fluor, one of the company's earliest references outside Africa and the Americas, and the rollers had to withstand high humidity, monsoon rainfall and temperatures consistently above 30°C, which put a premium on sealing and corrosion resistance.
At a 2026 site visit, nearly three decades after commissioning, a large share of the original 1998 Lorbrand rollers were still turning on the conveyor, after decades of tropical humidity, monsoon rain and heat.
LORBRAND SCOPE

Engineered for Batu Hijau.

Lorbrand supplied the idler rollers for Batu Hijau's 6.8 km overland ore conveyor through the project's EPC contractor, Fluor. It is one of the company's earliest references outside Africa and the Americas. Tropical conditions on Sumbawa, with high humidity, heavy monsoon rainfall and temperatures consistently above 30°C, placed particular demands on roller sealing and corrosion resistance on a 1.8 m wide belt carrying primary-crushed ore from the pit to the concentrator.

PROJECT OUTCOME

A 2026 site visit, nearly three decades after commissioning, found a large share of the original 1998 idler rollers still in service. At the time of construction, the project was the world's largest greenfield mining development, and Fluor delivered the full EPC scope one month ahead of schedule and roughly US$100 million under budget, on an island that had no prior infrastructure.
